Overview
Description: This project introduces students to maps and the laser engraving process. Students begin by learning about maps and the purpose of maps. Then the class reads a book about maps and identifies different components of maps. Next, students work in pairs or small groups to read a storybook and design a map that represents the book. With teacher assistance, students use the laser cutter/engraver to turn their sketched map into a laser engraved map. Students can use the laser engraved map to retell the story! This project includes three lessons and takes approximately three hours to complete.
Standards: This project aligns to Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, and Florida CPALMS Standards for first grade through third grade.
